Prepare for a Hike

Here are some tips to help you get the most out of each hike this summer.
Map: Print and carry with you the map for the day’s hike. Don’t rely on your cell phone to access the map on the website since reception can be unreliable in some remote areas.
Passes: Some hikes may require a park or hiking pass. The hike information you receive will indicate what, if any, passes are required.
Gear: Make sure you have the proper gear: backpack, sturdy hiking shoes/boots, hiking stick, flashlight, first aid materials, pocket knife, matches, and a whistle.
Clothing: Depending on the terrain and weather, you might want to wear pants or shorts, and a light pullover. Layering is advised in case the weather changes. And don’t forget a hat and/or sunglasses.
Food & Water: Carry plenty of water and light food. Fruit, sandwiches and energy bars work well.
Sunscreen: Carry insect repellent and sun screen.
Camera: Don’t forget your camera or camera-equipped phone. You need it to capture the team photo that proves your accomplishment!
